Shed Design & Construction

How Long Does It Take to Build a Shed?

The on-site build is usually the fastest part of putting up a shed. The full timeline, from first quote to handover, depends on design, approvals and site conditions. Here is a realistic breakdown of each stage so you know what to expect.

The stages of a shed project

1. Quote and design

This stage covers your initial consultation, site discussion and design process. You will work through size, layout, cladding, doors and any custom features. The time this takes depends on how settled your requirements are and whether revisions are needed.

2. Approvals

Many sheds require council or certifier approval before construction can start. Timeframes here vary depending on your local council, the size and location of the shed, and whether your site has any unusual conditions. This stage is often the biggest variable in the overall timeline and is largely outside your builder's control once the application is lodged.

3. Slab and site works

Once approvals are in place, site preparation and the concrete slab come next. This includes clearing the site, setting out levels, roughing in any services, pouring the slab and allowing it to cure before construction begins. Weather can affect this stage, particularly during wetter months.

4. Fabrication and delivery

For a custom shed, materials are fabricated to your specifications and then delivered to site. Lead times here depend on the complexity of the design and current supply timelines.

5. On-site installation

This is the stage most people picture when they think about a shed build, and it is usually the quickest part of the process. Standard sheds are often erected over a few days on site, with straightforward installs on a prepared slab commonly taking somewhere in the range of two to four days. Larger or more complex builds, or sites with access challenges, will take longer.

What affects the overall timeline

  • Council and approval processes, which vary between local government areas
  • Site access and conditions, including slope, soil and existing structures
  • Size and complexity of the shed, including custom features
  • Weather, particularly during slab works and installation
  • How quickly decisions and documents are finalised on your end

Because so much of the timeline sits outside the actual construction, it pays to start the approvals process as early as possible and keep communication open with your builder throughout.

Supply and install versus installation only

If Archon is supplying and installing your shed, the timeline includes design, fabrication and all site works alongside the build. If you have already purchased a shed and need installation only, the timeline is typically shorter, since it generally starts from the point the slab is ready and the building is on site, provided approvals have already been handled.

Frequently asked questions

What is the fastest part of building a shed?

The on-site installation is usually the quickest stage. Straightforward standard shed installs on a prepared slab often take a few days, though larger or more complex builds take longer.

What usually takes the longest?

Council and approval processes are often the biggest variable, since timeframes depend on your local council and site conditions rather than the builder.

Can I speed up the process?

Finalising your design early, responding promptly to requests for information, and starting approvals as soon as possible all help keep the project moving.

Does weather affect the build time?

Yes. Wet weather can delay slab works and installation. Your builder should factor this into scheduling where possible.
