Steel sheds
Steel is the most common choice for sheds across South East Queensland, and for good reason. It handles the region's heat and humidity without the swelling, warping or rot that can affect timber. It is also not a food source for termites, which are a genuine concern in many parts of the Gold Coast and Brisbane hinterland.
Steel framing and cladding are also well suited to the custom shapes and spans that many sheds need, from a simple single-bay garage to a large machinery shed. Maintenance is generally straightforward, mainly involving periodic checks and cleaning rather than ongoing treatment.
Timber sheds
Timber has its place, particularly where a building needs to blend in visually with a rural or heritage-style property, or where a specific aesthetic is the priority. However, timber needs more ongoing maintenance in Queensland's climate. It can be vulnerable to termites if not properly treated and protected, and humidity and moisture can affect timber over time if detailing and ventilation are not well considered.
If you do choose timber elements, make sure termite protection, treatment and detailing are addressed properly as part of the design, and factor in the ongoing maintenance commitment.

Cladding options for Queensland conditions
Beyond the structural frame, cladding choice affects how a shed performs day to day. Steel cladding, including Colorbond products, is widely used because it is durable and available in a wide range of profiles and colours. Things worth discussing with your builder include:
- Coastal proximity, which can affect the type of cladding and fixings best suited to salt-laden air
- Heat management, including colour choice and whether insulation is needed for comfort inside the shed
- Ventilation, to manage condensation and airflow, particularly in enclosed workshops
- Noise, since steel roofing can be noisier in heavy rain without insulation or sarking
Matching material to purpose
The best material also depends on how you plan to use the shed. A storage shed has different priorities to a workshop you will spend hours in, or a machinery shed holding valuable equipment. Think about:
- How often you will be working inside the shed, and whether comfort and insulation matter
- What you are storing, and whether pest resistance and security are a priority
- Whether the shed needs to match the style of an existing home or other buildings on the property
- Your long-term maintenance preferences
For most Queensland properties, a steel frame with Colorbond or similar steel cladding offers a strong balance of durability, low maintenance and design flexibility. The right specification for your site, including any wind or exposure considerations, should still be confirmed through proper engineering and design for your project.

Is steel better than timber for sheds in Queensland?
Steel generally requires less maintenance and handles Queensland's heat, humidity and termite risk well. Timber can still suit specific aesthetic needs but requires more ongoing care and termite protection.
Does cladding colour matter for heat?
Colour can influence how much heat a shed absorbs. Your builder can talk through colour and insulation options to suit how you plan to use the space.
Are steel sheds suitable near the coast?
Steel sheds can suit coastal areas, but cladding and fixing choices should account for salt exposure. Discuss your site's proximity to the coast with your builder.
Can I mix materials, like a steel frame with timber features?
Yes, many sheds combine steel structure with timber accents for a particular look. Just make sure any timber elements are properly treated and detailed for durability.
